This text is the second revised edition of a detailed commentary on forty selected traditions narrated from the Prophet and his Ahl al-Bayt (a), addressing themes of ethics and spirituality.
Thirty-three of the hadiths selected by Imam Khomeini concern Islamic ethics, including actions and qualities that lead to Divine reward or punishment.
The remaining seven focus on beliefs and theological concepts associated with the Twelver Shi‘i tradition.
The very first hadith addresses jihad al-nafs, the struggle against the self, which seeks to cultivate and elevate the human personality through self-control and self-discipline.
It calls upon believers to refrain from such spiritual and moral vices as pride (kibr), ostentation or showing off (riya’), self-conceit (‘ujb), envy (hasad), attachment to the world, anger (ghadab), prejudice or partisan fanaticism (‘asabiyyah), and hypocrisy (nifaq).
Throughout the collection, Imam Khomeini includes traditions that guide the reader toward spiritual and intellectual elevation through reflection and contemplation (tafakkur), reliance upon God (tawakkul), recognition of humanity’s innate inclination to seek God, awareness of the ultimate meeting with God, and the cultivation of fear and awe of Him (khawf). The original Persian work, published under the title Arba‘in, ya Chihil Hadith (“Forty Hadith”), was written by Imam al-Khumayni forty-six years ago and completed in the month of Muharram 1358 AH (April–May 1939). The manuscript, along with two other previously unpublished works by the author—Sharh Du‘a-ye Sahar and Adab al-Salat—was recovered from the library of the late Ayatullah Akhund al-Hamadani. All three works have since been published.
