A determined, steely, uncompromising figure, Ayatollah Khomeini shook the world and was regarded as the absolute leader of Iran. He treated opponents as powerless before Islam. Throughout the struggle era of the Iranian Revolution, his message remained simple: 'The Shah must go.' None of the numerous proposals for compromise went anywhere.
