Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini made the announcement during a joint press conference in the Austrian capital Vienna on Saturday.
This came affter the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed Tehran’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
“It’s a good day for the people of Iran … and also a good day for the region. The sanctions will be lifted today,” Iranian foreign minister had earlier said on Saturday after arriving in Austria’s capital, Vienna, adding, “It proved that we can solve important problems through diplomacy, not threats and pressure, and thus today is definitely an important day.”
“Today, with the submission of the report by the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the JCPOA will in fact become implemented, and after that, a joint statement… will be read out to announce the implementation,” the foreign minister said.
Zarif has also pointed out that the implementation of a nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries is in the offing. “We're getting to Implementation Day,” Zarif has said on Twitter, adding, “Nothing serious. Diplomacy requires patience, but we all know that it sure beats the alternatives,” he added.
Amid expectations of an announcement by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the landmark nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), can enter into force.
The sanctions imposed by some Western countries against Iran will lifted when the IAEA declares Tehran’s compliance with the JCPOA.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany finalized the text of the JCPOA in Vienna, on July 14, 2015.
JCPOA agreement is considered as a victory of Iranian diplomacy on international arena.
