Dr. Fatemeh Tabatabaei, the respected daughter-in-law of Imam Khomeini , emphasized at the session the need for a systematic re-examination of Imam Khomeini’s thought and expressed her satisfaction with the Institute’s efforts to develop policy packages.
Referring to her personal concern that “scattered ideas in the mind should be gathered and systematically synthesized,” she recalled some of Imam Khomeini’s personal qualities, including his “critical philosophical mind, intelligence, and insight.” She stated that what drew her to Imam Khomeini was the manifestation of faith in his conduct and the profound connection between theory and practice.
The respected daughter-in-law of Imam Khomeini added that he sought a monotheistic and rational society, free from undesirable behaviors such as backbiting, slander, and hypocrisy. “If we want this vision to be implemented in society, we must properly define the scope of religion in both individual and social life; otherwise, we cannot respond to the needs of human beings today.”
She also referred to Imam Khomeini’s initial views regarding the clergy and their entry into politics, saying that Imam Khomeini did not initially favor the direct involvement of the clergy in politics, because he believed that the clergy should remain a refuge and source of support for the people.
Tabatabaei said that Imam Khomeini had come to believe that “religion is beneficial not only for the Hereafter but also for human beings’ worldly life.” Therefore, “this world should be shaped in such a way as to ensure human happiness and security.”
Referring to the fact that Imam Khomeini had no hesitation in confronting social transformations because his decisions were grounded in rational convictions, she emphasized that Imam Khomeini sought to “establish a society in which religious beliefs would be translated into principles of governance.”
According to Tabatabaei, Imam Khomeini emphasized that the clergy should fulfill their emancipatory role in society. However, she noted that moving away from these fundamental principles has had undesirable consequences for society.
